Why I Train: The Real Reason Fitness Matters
Most people think fitness is about looking better. After a day spent paragliding in 35-degree heat, I was reminded that the real purpose of training is much bigger than that. It's about building a body that allows you to say yes to life.

A couple of days ago, I went paragliding for the first time.
It was one of the hottest days of the year and the session involved repeatedly hiking up a steep hill in 35-degree heat carrying equipment between flights.
Before we started, the instructor looked at me and said:
“The only real limitation today will probably be your fitness.”
That stuck with me.
Because while I’m not currently the fittest I’ve ever been, I’m still in good shape.
Strong. Mobile. Capable. Comfortable in my body.
And it meant that instead of spending the morning exhausted, struggling or sitting things out, I got stuck in properly.
We managed five solid flights in around 90 minutes and by the end of the session I was progressing quickly, landing confidently and genuinely enjoying the challenge.
On the drive home, my 10-year-old son asked me if I enjoyed it.
I told him I loved it. Then he asked me something unexpected.
“Why are you so good at everything?”
Now, that’s a slightly awkward thing to repeat because I don’t think anyone wants to sound arrogant. But I also think there’s value in acknowledging the work you’ve put into yourself over the years.
So I answered him honestly. I told him this is exactly why I train.
Fitness Should Improve Your Life Outside The Gym
At Gather, we talk about this all the time.
The goal of training is not just aesthetics.
It’s not just abs.
It’s not just calories burned, step counts or personal bests.
Those things can all be useful metrics, but they are not the end goal.
The real purpose of fitness is improving your quality of life.
For me, training gives me the confidence to throw myself into new experiences without constantly worrying whether my body can handle it.
A couple of years ago I went wakeboarding for the first time. Next week I’m going canyoning and gravel biking.
And instead of worrying about whether I’m fit enough, strong enough or resilient enough, I’m excited.
That freedom matters.
What Functional Fitness Actually Means
“Functional fitness” has become a bit of a buzzword in the fitness industry, but at its core it’s actually very simple.
It means building a body that allows you to fully participate in your life.
That might mean:
Hiking without your knees hurting
Carrying your kids without putting your back out
Having enough energy at the end of the day to still be present with your family
Feeling confident trying new sports or activities
Travelling without feeling physically limited
Being able to move well, recover well and stay active as you age
For me personally, one of the biggest indicators of progress is this:
My son can still sprint at me full speed and leap into my arms without either of us worrying about it.
That means more to me than any number on a barbell.
Why We Focus On Strength Training At Gather
At our gym in North Greenwich, we focus heavily on strength training and Small Group Personal Training because strength underpins almost everything.
Strength helps protect your joints.
Strength improves confidence.
Strength helps you stay capable and independent as you get older.
Strength improves resilience both physically and mentally.
But importantly, we don’t train purely for performance in the gym.
We train for life outside it.
We want our members to feel more energetic, more capable and more confident in their own skin.
We want them to feel physically prepared for the demands of real life, whether that’s parenting, work, sport, travel or simply feeling healthier day to day.
The Best Type Of Fitness Is The Kind You Can Use
The older I get, the less interested I am in fitness that only exists inside the four walls of a gym.
I care far more about being able to use my body.
To move well.
To say yes to opportunities.
To feel physically confident in new environments and experiences.
That’s the real return on investment from training.
Not just looking fit.
Living well.
