Should You Change Your Workout Routine? Here's What Actually Works
Many people wonder whether they should stick to the same workout or constantly mix things up. Here's why the answer isn't as simple as you might think, and how we programme at Gather to help members get stronger, fitter and healthier throughout the year.

One of the questions we're asked most often is:
"Why have the workouts changed?"
Maybe you've noticed the weights are getting heavier.
Perhaps there are fewer reps than last month.
Or maybe the focus has shifted from conditioning to strength.
That's completely intentional.
Because the best training programmes don't stay the same all year.
They evolve.
Why your workouts shouldn't always be the same
Your body is incredibly good at adapting.
That's exactly what we want.
But once it has adapted to a particular training style, progress begins to slow.
That's why effective training isn't about doing random exercises to "keep your body guessing".
It's about introducing the right challenge at the right time.
Each phase of training builds on the one before it.
Why we programme in phases
At Gather, every month has a slightly different emphasis.
Some months we spend more time developing strength.
Others focus more on muscular endurance, work capacity, movement quality or cardiovascular fitness.
The goal isn't to become brilliant at one thing.
The goal is to become healthier, stronger and more capable across every area of fitness.
Changing the focus helps us continue making progress without burning out or plateauing.
Why July is all about strength
Throughout July, you'll notice more emphasis on strength.
That means:
Slightly heavier weights
Fewer repetitions
More rest between sets
More focus on quality movement
Many people think lifting heavier simply means trying to lift as much as possible.
That's not what we're aiming for.
Strength training is about creating enough challenge for your muscles to adapt.
In coaching, we call this mechanical tension.
Put simply, your muscles need a reason to become stronger.
Choosing the right weight, moving well and pushing yourself appropriately gives your body that reason.
Your coach will help you find the right level for you.
The first challenge is showing up
For most people, the hardest part of training isn't lifting heavy.
It's building the habit of turning up.
Once you've achieved that, there's another challenge.
Making every session count.
You don't need to leave every workout exhausted.
But you should leave knowing you've challenged yourself.
That challenge is what drives progress.
Small improvements become big results
Real progress rarely comes from one incredible workout.
It comes from hundreds of good ones.
Adding 2.5kg to a lift.
Completing one extra repetition.
Improving your technique.
Recovering well.
Repeating that process week after week.
Those small improvements add up to remarkable changes over time.
Trust the process
There will always be sessions you enjoy more than others.
Some months you'll love the conditioning.
Other months you'll enjoy lifting heavier.
Both have their place.
Every phase has a purpose.
Every session is another step towards becoming stronger, healthier and more confident.
Our job as coaches is to decide where the focus should be.
Your job is simply to keep showing up and giving your best.
We'll take care of the rest.
