How Do You Know If You're Actually Getting Stronger?

If you've ever wondered whether your workouts are paying off, here's how to measure real progress in the gym and why simply relying on the scales or the mirror often leads people astray.

Most people judge their fitness by how they feel.

Some weeks you feel strong.

Other weeks you feel tired.

The problem is that feelings don't always tell the full story.

That's why, on the first Saturday of every month, we run one of the most valuable sessions in our timetable: Progression Sessions.

They're not about competing with anyone else.

They're about discovering what you're are capable of, tracking your progress over time and building confidence in your own ability.

What is a Progression Session?

Think of it as a monthly health check for your fitness.

Instead of following a normal workout, you'll complete a series of simple tests that measure your progress across three key areas:

  • Strength

  • Muscular endurance

  • Cardiovascular fitness

We record your results so that, the following month, you have something meaningful to compare against.

Over time, these snapshots build a picture of how your fitness is improving.

Why tracking your progress matters

One of the biggest mistakes people make is relying on the scales to judge whether their training is working.

Your weight might not change for weeks.

But underneath the surface, your body could already be getting stronger, fitter and more capable.

When you measure your performance instead of just your weight, you start to notice progress you might otherwise miss.

Perhaps you lifted 10kg more than last month.

Maybe you completed more reps.

Perhaps your heart rate recovered more quickly.

These improvements are often far more meaningful than the number on the scales.

It's one of the best workouts you'll do

Some people assume Progression Sessions aren't "proper workouts".

The opposite is usually true.

Because you're focused on your own performance, you'll often work harder than you do in a standard training session.

You have time to recover properly between efforts.

You can concentrate on your technique.

You have the confidence to gradually increase the weight when it's appropriate.

Many members are surprised to discover they're capable of lifting considerably more than they expected.

That confidence doesn't stay in the Progression Session.

It carries into every Small Group Personal Training session that follows.

Building confidence through evidence

Confidence doesn't come from someone telling you you're getting stronger.

It comes from seeing it for yourself.

When you compare your numbers month after month, you begin to trust what your body is capable of.

You stop guessing.

You stop holding back.

You stop thinking, "I probably can't lift that."

Instead, you know.

That confidence is one of the biggest reasons we run these sessions every month.

Progress, not perfection

Some months you'll set personal bests.

Other months you won't.

Both are completely normal.

Life gets busy.

Sleep changes.

Stress changes.

Energy changes.

The goal isn't to improve every single month.

The goal is to keep showing up, collecting the data and giving yourself the opportunity to improve over time.

Fitness isn't built in one great session.

It's built through months and years of consistent effort.

Should I come if I've never done one before?

Absolutely.

In fact, your very first Progression Session is one of the most important.

It gives you a starting point.

From there, every month becomes an opportunity to see how far you've come.

You don't need to be strong.

You don't need to be experienced.

You just need to be willing to give it your best.

We'll guide you through the whole session and make sure you leave knowing exactly where you're starting and what you're capable of achieving.
